Book Review: Like a Mule Bringing Ice Cream to the Sun

Like a Mule Bringing Ice Cream to the Sun by Sarah Ladipo ManyikaI found this gem in one of two recent searches I conducted - and I can't remember which - because this book fits both. I have been looking for novels with strong female protagonists. And I've been searching for novels written by and/or set in cultures other than my own. While Morayo lives in San Francisco, she is not from, nor does she neatly blend into San Francisco. Morayo is an independent woman in her 70s who loves life, books, and Buttercup, the sports car she bought with her life savings. The characters inhabiting Morayo's world are beautifully and deeply developed, the plot is simple but profound - and the glimpse into Morayo's past life and loves delicately drawn.I found myself thinking, "I want to be like Morayo when I grow up."Certainly, a refreshing read if you would like to meet a protagonist that inspires you to live going forward rather than with a backward-looking 'what if'.
