Book Review: Creating Affluence
Creating Affluence: Wealth Consciousness in the Field of All Possibilities by Deepak Chopra, M.D.I've always appreciated the teachings of Deepak Chopra but was a bit surprised to see that he wrote about abundance. But somehow it came into my possession (and I'm not certain how or when).About a year ago, I picked up this little 100-page gift-book and began to read. But it isn't a book meant to be read through and set aside. Even Chopra recommends that you read through it once, and then read five pages of the A-Z list daily, over and over again - as a lifelong habit. While I haven't made this a lifelong habit of daily reading, I carry this book tucked in the side pocket of my purse most of the time - or it sits on my side table as a reminder of its contents. From time to time, particularly when I am stressing over our financial situation, I think about it and even read a page or two.I don't believe that this book is magic, and I agree that "Using effort to consciously practice an attitude or to cultivate a mood is unnecessary and can cause stress and strain" (Chopra, pg 25). I appreciate how he roots his theories on abundance and wealth in quantum physics and impulses of energy - and stresses the importance of attention and intention. The abundance, affluence, and desire Chopra discusses reaches far beyond money and encompasses all of life. One of my favorite quotes is, "If you are constantly concerned about how much money you need, then irrespective of the actual dollar amount you have in your account, you are really poor" (Chopra, pg 29) - but the book is filled with gems of wisdom throughout. In Part II, Chopra discusses the 25 qualities of the 'unified field' and suggests that we choose a quality each day of the month to give our attention, so that "It will soon embed itself in your awareness, in your consciousness" (Chopra, pg 90).Though the book is short, the subject matter is dense - and profound. While I encourage library borrowing for many books, I highly recommend you purchase this book -- or find the audiobook on YouTube where you can listen repeatedly.
